About the opportunity:

The Leader of School Learning and Wellbeing will support schools to provide high quality and equitable education for all students. The role promotes learning and wellbeing practices based on contemporary, evidence-based principles. This position and the team which reports to it, works closely with school leaders to ensure that adopted approaches for improved planning and teaching, in turn, improve student learning. The team will work closely with schools to address school learning and wellbeing challenges as captured through their annual School Improvement Plans.

The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of systemic schools which educate more than 20,000 students in 45 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, one K–12 school, one flexible learning centre and one special school in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The position of Leader of School Learning and Wellbeing supports schools from a system level.

Job Description


The Assistant Head Learning & Wellbeing is a member of the CSO's leadership team.

This role is responsible for creating a culture of responsibility, deep learning, enhanced wellbeing, and a sense of belonging for all, ensuring:

  • Every student is known as a person and a learner, and they demonstrate growth in their learning every year.
  • Provision of high-quality learning for teachers, leaders and schools through collaborative and relevant, contemporary professional learning experiences
  • Achievement of professional development for teachers, leaders, and schools through collaborative professional development and relevant, contemporary professional learning. • Development of an adaptive, innovative, and continuous learning culture.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Data and Analytics to ensure accuracy in learning and wellbeing data that informs the schools in their progress
  • This position is a member of the CSO Leadership team, whose role is to foster positive culture that drives and encourages high performance, collaboration, agility, accountability and trust.
Desired Skills and Experience

EXPERIENCE/CRITERIA

  • Practising Catholic, with a clear understanding of contemporary issues in the Catholic Church and a personal commitment to Catholic education and the mission of Catholic schools and the Catholic Church.
  • Experience establishing and sustaining collaborative multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated support to school staff in achieving quality student learning outcomes as an instructional leader and team builder.
  • Experience in leading change and driving improvement, building effective professional learning communities, and embedding and applying new learning within a rapidly changing sector and global environment.
  • Expertise in pedagogy, curriculum, and wellbeing as well as familiarity with state and national developments in education.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with Principals, staff in school systems, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills with the capacity to effectively use data to optimise student outcomes.
  • Sound knowledge of all relevant legislation and legal frameworks including child protection, work health and safety, equity and diversity and performance management principles and the capacity to implement relevant plans and policies to ensure strong governance.
  • A strong track record in scholarship in learning and wellbeing, the nature and purpose of Catholic schooling and/or educational leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated understanding of pedagogy and curriculum K-12.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in education, educational leadership with demonstrated teaching experience and experience as a senior educator or an equivalent combination of experience, training, and achievement.
  • Active NESA Teacher Accreditation
  • Current paid NSW Working with Children Check
  • Level E Accreditation to Work, Teach and Lead

Conditions of employment

The position is classified as a Grade 4, with a starting salary of $154,544 plus super.

The position will be covered by the Catholic Schools Office Enterprise Agreement, which includes compensatory leave (two weeks per annum) in the school holidays.
