We are seeking a sports reporter to join our team and work on setting the sport news agenda, including by breaking exclusives, writing features, profiles, investigations and analysis, as well as covering breaking news.

In this role you will….

  • Break sport news, including through investigations
  • Cover unfolding breaking news for both women’s and men’s sport stories quickly and accurately
  • Explain, analyse and bring context to sport stories for Guardian Australia’s national audience, including through features and profiles
  • Understand pressures and issues facing sporting organisations and sportspeople, across all major sporting codes
  • Contribute to Guardian Australia’s varied formats, including podcasts, video and interactive reports
  • Interact with readers, responding to ideas and using information as source material
  • Develop deep contacts in key story areas to further Guardian Australia’s sport coverage


You’ll bring….

  • Experience working as a sport writer in a fast-changing news environment, preferably on a news website
  • Proven history of breaking news, including sport news and a strong network of contacts
  • Experience writing both news and features
  • The ability to generate ideas for sports news and investigations
  • Strong news sense and ability to generate fresh ideas and angles
  • A deep understanding of mens and womens sports, along with a highly developed understanding of media law
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
  • A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values

This role is being offered on a full-time, permanent basis, including weekend work with early starts or late finishes, and can be based out of either Sydney or Melbourne.
