The Molecular Cardiology lab (PI: Prof. Dr. Steffen Just; www.justlab.de) in the Department of Internal Medicine II (Medical Director: Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rottbauer), is currently looking for a PhD student (f/m/d)

The University Hospital Ulm with its employees (f/m/d) stands for modern patient care with high quality, top research and medical teaching oriented towards the future as well as training in attractive professional fields. The prerequisites for this are qualified and committed employees (f/m/d). to reveal the role of novel gene mutations in cardiomyopathies using patient iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and zebrafish models.

Despite intensive research efforts, the genetic and molecular bases of myocardial disease, arrhythmias and congenital heart defects are still largely unknown. In cooperation with the Biobank of Cardiomyopathy Ulm (BCMU), patients with heart disease at Ulm University Medical Center are routinely screened for mutations in genes associated with cardiomyopathy. These newly identified gene variants and mutations have to be characterized for their pathogenicity and their detailed molecular impact on disease onset and progression. Techniques applied include in vitro experiments (e.g. using patient iPSc-derived cardiomyocytes) and in vivo (zebrafish) functional genomics such as advanced genetic tools for gene editing (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9, transgenesis), molecular biology, biochemistry, and advanced microscopy techniques. Also, omics approaches generating transcriptome, proteome, and interactome datasets will be applied. Therefore, we seek an enthusiastic, highly motivated researcher, who will join our international research team working on the identification and characterization of novel gene mutations (using zebrafish and patient-derived cardiomyocyte cell lines) and the associated molecular networks that control cardiac function to finally define novel targets for therapeutic intervention.

We offer:

  • the opportunity to work in a dynamic and highly motivated team of biologists and physicians
  • an interesting research project in a stimulating and competitive field of science
  • payment according to the collective Agreement TV-L
  • a workplace health promotion
  • numerous training and continuing education opportunities
  • support concerning the compatibility of job and family
  • Contract: limited
  • Level of employment: 65%

We expect:
  • a Masters degree in biology, biochemistry or molecular medicine
  • a highly motivated, enthusiastic and efficient researcher
  • experience in molecular and cellular biology
  • excellent communication skills in spoken and written English
  • capability of working in a team as well as independently
