We have vacancies for full time Customs Officers in Wellington, where you'll be identifying and preventing potential security and community risks coming in and out of New Zealand.

As a Customs Officer you will have a high level of integrity, honesty and discretion. You will also be interacting with a wide range of people from all walks of life and will help ensure a quality passenger experience.

You'll be:

  • working across a 5 week rotation roster that covers airport, inspections, marine and surge (overflow)
  • processing passengers and goods in/out of Aotearoa which can include search activities
  • facilitating legitimate trade and travel, collect import and export data
  • intercepting contraband (such as drugs and weapons)
  • inspecting cargo and mail, assessing and collecting duty/GST on imports

To join Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident*. Due to the nature of Customs' work all candidates must have a clear Police record. Security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs. Due to the nature of this work, you must be able to obtain and maintain organisational clearance.

(*) You need to have continuously resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and 5 years ago from the date of this application. If you haven't we may not be able to progress your application.

If you have lived in one or more of the following countries: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or United States for short periods of time ie <6 months and are able to obtain Police Certificates for the period/s of your absence you may still be eligible.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level.

Assessments will likely be held on the 5th or 6th of April at Custom House, Wellington. All details will be finalised shortly and sent to candidates who are shortlisted. Please note, there is also a possibility of being banked for Variable Hours roles from this assessment Centre. Training for this intake will commence on the 19th June 2023.
