ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORS
Permanent/Full-Time

Are you looking to add to your experience and knowledge of Te Ao Maori?
Do you have an interest in supporting the role of mana whenua and to help shape environmental
outcomes that reflect tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi?
Would you like to reset your career pathway in area outside of the traditional roles at Councils
and consultancies?

Mahaanui Kurataiao is an environmental services agency owned by six Papatipu Rūnanga in Canterbury. We provide advice and support to mana whenua in relation to the use of resources and environmental outcomes within Hurunui, Waimakariri, Christchurch and Selwyn Districts. We facilitate engagement between the Papatipu Rūnanga and territorial and regional authorities, the Crown and private entities and individuals.

Mahaanui Kurataiao is a small organisation that is looking to adapt its services in response to the changing environmental legislation of Aotearoa. We also need to build our support to Papatipu Rūnanga in response to climate change, achieving wellbeing within a cultural context, addressing the loss of biodiversity and declining water quality.

Mahaanui Kurataiao has a diverse and busy portfolio. Our work currently covers requests for cultural input and advice, statutory planning and support for developments being led by hapū and Rūnanga. We are involved in the development of strategies, policies and plans, including for non-RMA purposes. Looking ahead we have major projects that will need to be implemented to inform and shape plans to be prepared under the new environmental legislation. Our role may also need to expand to provide enhanced support and services where the representation and role of mana whenua is being enhanced.

We are looking for advisors who have relevant professional experience in an environmental industry from which they can draw upon to provide guidance to the share-holding Rūnanga. Preferred candidates will have an open and collaborative working style, the confidence to interface with a wide range of agencies and the ability to juggle multiple projects. We are looking for people with excellent writing skills, research and analytical skills and the ability to take complex information and distil this into succinct advice.

If you have over five years' experience in an environmental related industry with relevant research, analytical, writing or regulatory experience; strong communication skills and an interest in the evolving role of Māori in New Zealand's environmental management; then you could be just who we are looking for. Planning experience is a definite advantage but not necessary.

A competitive salary is available and professional development is actively supported.
