The opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team as a Librarian in the Sue Thomson Casey Memorial Library, based in Westport.


This role is vital for connecting children, youth, families and whānau with services and programmes in Buller’s libraries. You will be supporting the Library manager in the day to day running of the library and provide opportunities to engage the community in the design of services and initiatives targeting children, youth and families. A key aspect of this role is that you be a role model and coach in providing great customer service to children, youth and the wider whānau.

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

  • The ability to develop stakeholder relationships and work collaboratively
  • Comfortable with technology and able to support customers to successfully use information resources and devices that are available at the library
  • Experience working with children and young people
  • Flexible and collaborative approach to your work
  • Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
  • Passion about making a difference in the community
  • Willing to work with the library team in the delivery and design of innovative programmes and events
  • Strong children and youth readers advisory skills

Ideally, we are seeking an experienced librarian with LIANZA professional registration.

However, we also encourage you to apply if you possess a tertiary qualification in a related discipline and are both committed and motivated to complete the LIANZA registration over the course of a 12 month period. Buller District Council is committed to providing a supportive development plan to complete the LIANZA registration requirements. What is needed is your commitment to this!

You will bring with you a sound knowledge of library technologies and processes, enthusiasm, and an ability to collaborate in the development, implementation and delivery of services and programmes. As this is a role that involves working with children and youth and their families, you will have the natural ability to relate well with people of all ages and backgrounds, excellent communication, and strong digital and readers advisory skills are essential.
