Southland Help is a not-for-profit agency which provides specialist support to whanau in the Southland Region who have experienced or been impacted by sexual harm.
We are looking for a special person to join our team. Southland Help is seeking an experienced Counsellor to work with tangata whaiora in crisis and recovery in areas of sexual harm and trauma.

The most important qualities we are looking for are compassion and courage, to walk alongside tangata whaiora as they navigate their healing journey. We are dedicated to a ‘whanau centred approach’, so having the ability to maintain focus and adapt to the needs of the whanau is essential.

In this role you will:

    • Provide 1:1 counselling to individuals to help them bring about effective change to enhance their wellbeing.
    • Coordinate and assist with the delivery of programmes and wananga.
    • Promote the awareness and understanding of the impact of family violence and sexual violence within the community.
    • Provide a therapeutic approach to preventing and reducing violence in families / whanau.
    • Work collaboratively alongside a multi-disciplinary team and with other community agencies e.g. Police, STOP, Oranga Tamariki, Barnados, Family Works etc.
You will have a relevant tertiary qualification in counselling and may have experience running groups for children and adults. A comprehensive understanding of the effect of trauma on persons affected by rape and sexual violence or a willingness to undertake training in this area is a requirement.

Preferably you will have knowledge and some experience of trauma-based interventions with adults, children, adolescents and families however full training will be provided. This is a great opportunity to apply and extend your skillset in this area. Current membership to a professional organisation e.g. NZAC, NZAP, ANZASW or NZACAP is essential.
