About Police Now

Our mission is to transform communities, reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, and increase the public’s confidence in the police service, by recruiting, developing and inspiring outstanding and diverse leaders in society and on the policing frontline.

We are working towards a day when every community, whatever the socio-economic background of its residents, can thrive without being fearful of crime. We are looking for talented, committed and mission-aligned individuals who will drive us towards achieving our ambitions.

Police Now trains graduates and career changers with leadership potential to become inspirational police officers and outstanding crime fighters on our National Graduate Leadership Programme and our National Detective Programme. Beyond these programmes our officers are provided with the opportunity to join our Frontline Leadership Programme and be further developed giving them the best possible chance to progress through the policing ranks and have a lifelong connection with us. Our 115-strong not-for-profit organisation aims to create systemic change; we need highly capable impactful staff to support the recruitment and development of our officers and to cultivate strong relationships with partner forces and the wider sector.

The purpose of your role

The Communications and External Affairs Coordinator will support the Communications and External Affairs Team (CEA) across three core workstreams:

  • Media & Communications
  • Policy, Home Affairs and external partners
  • Participant Secondments Programme

Working to ensure a consistent positive narrative about Police Now and its' participants across a range of stakeholders, the Coordinator will source positive impact case studies and support various written work from press releases and coverage reports, to secondment opportunity brochures and stakeholder engagement.

This role forms part of a busy team, and presents lots of opportunities to support varied workstreams.

Key responsibilities

  • Working with the Media & Communications Officer to support positive relationships with media outlets across the UK, monitoring the PR inbox to ensure that enquiries are dealt with.
  • Attending Police Now events to gather participant impact stories/quotes and build policing & programmes knowledge.
  • Publishing authorised news to Police Now’s website and monitoring Twitter engagement.
  • Monitor online engagement and media coverage utilising our media monitoring service and other online tools.
  • Supporting the delivery of monthly media & communication reports to analyse output, results and social media engagement.
  • Supporting the Policy & Public Affairs Assistant Manager to deliver a professional service to key stakeholders including the Home Office by preparing papers and recording actions at meetings.
  • Working with the Secondments Partnership Officer to ensure the successful delivery of all aspects of the Participant Secondment Programme, including preparing briefings for business partnership meetings, delivering promotional material, responding to police officer enquiries, and ensuring expenses are in line with policy.
  • Proof-read external material for teams across the department including force invitations to events, stakeholder emails and various reports to ensure accuracy and professionalism.
  • Collaborate across the wider Policing & Home Affairs department to ensure that the CEA team is represented and comms opportunities are identified and fed back.
  • Attend weekly Force Partnership meetings to represent CEA and identify possible force events and activities that CEA could utilise for comms and stakeholder engagement purposes.

What you will need

This is a highly varied role in a fast-paced organisation and, as such we are looking for a quick learner who is as determined as we are to see the Police Now mission succeed. Although prior experience in a similar role is helpful, we are more interested in your attitude and your willingness and ability to learn new skills, quickly. We would like someone who has lots of energy and plenty of initiative, who is able to identify improvements and add value to the work that we do.

You will need to have strong organisational skills to balance the varied workload as well as excellent written skills due to the nature of the role. This means that you must also have the ability to work on tasks independently. You need to have a meticulous eye for detail as you will be required to quality assure contracts, reports, project plans and other programme documents before they are shared with our customers, and you will have, or be willing to develop at pace, an excellent understanding of our partner police forces, the Police Now programmes and the wider policing landscape.

You must possess a genuine commitment to public service and the Police Now mission, values and aims. You can prioritise effectively, manage yourself with limited oversight and get things done in an environment where priorities and deadlines shift quickly.

Key requirements

  • A genuine commitment to the Police Now mission and values
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Strong news sense, with the ability to identify PR opportunities
  • Good understanding and interest in UK policing and politics
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced environment where priorities can change and workload can be varied
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing workloads
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong Microsoft Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • A willingness to learn and an ability to pick up new skills quickly
  • Ability to work under pressure

What you'll get from us

  • A bright, airy and modern office in Zone 1.
  • Competitive salary of £27,000-£30,000 per annum (dependent on experience and inclusive of London weighting)
  • Flexible working
  • 27 days holiday each year plus bank holidays
  • Access to a benefit platform, which includes salary sacrifice schemes such as cycle to work and smart tech as well as access to over 750 retailers and discounts.
  • Sanctus coaching (private mental health coaching for the workplace)
  • Access to the Vitality programme which includes healthcare benefits, an Employee Assistance Programme and discounts
  • Training opportunities for personal development.
  • Participation in a pension scheme (with 6% employer contributions and 2% employee contributions)
