Salary £27,445 to £32,723 per annum (dependent upon experience)
Location: London with some flexibility
Hours: Full time (35 hours per week)*

This is a new role at the Royal Society of Biology and we are seeking a self-motivated, positive, and upbeat individual who feels passionate about the biosciences and communicating across a range of social media channels to create impact. We're looking for someone with creative awareness who can use their initiative and is keen to stay current with the latest news and trends.

This new role of Social Media and Website Officer will coordinate content on the RSB's website and deliver the RSB's social media strategy ensuring a joined up and coherent web presence. We're looking for someone with strong writing and editing skills, experienced at producing content for a range of social media platforms. The role will manage the day-to-day handling of RSB's social media channels, adapting content to suit audiences and platforms.

The role will be part of the Parliamentary and Public Affairs team working closely with colleagues in media, outreach and membership.

Job Description


Reports to: Associate Director of Parliamentary and Public Affairs
Contract: Permanent (subject to 3 months' probation)
Salary: £27,445 to £32723 depending upon experience

Main Objectives

Coordinate content on the RSB's website and deliver RSB's social media strategy by delivering exceptional content and social media response. Working in the Parliamentary and Public Affairs Department to ensure a joined up and coherent web presence and delivering the RSB's social media across the whole organisation and ensuring content is on brand and on message.

Key Responsibilities

Website content
  • Coordinate website content across the Society and monitor and maintain all website content to ensure all team's content is accurate, up to date, written in plain English and meets usability and accessibility standards
  • Coordinate home page and banner content to ensure the website remains up to date, dynamic and reflects the calendar of Society and external events
  • Design, build, amend, monitor and archive webpages and e-forms to meet the needs of the RSB and ensure search engine optimisation
  • Draft, edit and sub-edit engaging and easy to understand content so that members can find what they need
Social media content delivery
  • Help to implement the social media strategy across the RSB's various platforms in line with the RSB's digital marketing strategy
  • Manage, monitor and report on the RSBs' social media presence, thereby informing the strategy
  • Staying up to date with latest social media best practices and technologies
  • Responsible for all day-to-day social media execution (included RSB's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn accounts), and maintaining the social media calendar
  • Work with colleagues to create original, quality, and engaging content for the RSB's supporters that brings RSB's brand to life, ensuring the quality by editing or adapting content as necessary
  • Deliver live-blogging or live coverage sessions as needed
  • Work with the Associate Director to identify opportunities to increase the brand, influence and fundraising or campaigning initiatives
  • Maintain and update a social media calendar for the Society of key internal and external events
  • Work with colleagues to help delivery of an annual impactful Biology Week programme of digital and online events and activities and to support in-person elements of Biology Week
Social media response
  • Respond to supporters on the RSB's various social media channels: DMs, comments, and mentions, ensuring RSB's values and reputation are upheld
  • Flag reputational risk issues as needed
  • Coordinate day to day social media support
  • Extract and report on social media KPIs
  • Measure the success of social media campaigns
  • Provide extra capacity on key projects or on day-to-day work,
  • Help provide quality-control support, e.g. proof-reading, and assisting with training and advice to staff
  • Help triage online requests

Person Specification


Education
  • a degree (or equivalent) in the biosciences or related subjects
Experience
  • demonstrable experience of digital communication and website management
  • working with committees and a range of collaborators (desirable)
Knowledge and Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to communicate with a range of audiences and particularly with key opinion leaders
  • Excellent organisational experience
  • A collaborative, collegiate and supportive mind-set and a pro-active approach
  • Analytical skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • IT proficient including a sound working knowledge relevant to the role.
  • Broad understanding of and interest in developments in the biosciences and in communicating them.
  • Committed to communication of the biological sciences and with bioscientists
  • Naturally diplomatic, having the ability to handle sensitive issues with care and to guarantee confidentiality when required
  • Driven to promote excellence in bioscience and its communication
  • Willing to engage in the full range of subjects related to biology and to communicate the Society's agreed position on these
