POSITION SUMMARY:

The Boston Medical Center Department of Psychiatry's Global & Local Center for Mental Health Disparities seeks to improve the mental health of our diverse global communities, both locally in the greater Boston area and internationally. At the Global & Local Center, we believe that working with a global mindset means working with an appreciation for the diverse ways in which local culture, customs, beliefs, and traditions substantially impact how individuals view their health and mental health, as well as how culture influences health-seeking behaviors and beliefs about treatment.

Under the supervision of the Global Program Director, the Research Associate serves as a key member of the Global & Local Center team and works to advance the department's various clinical, research, and training programs globally. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with strong cultural competence and excellent judgment, an organized team member accomplished at managing multiple tasks professionally, an outstanding writer able to perform under tight deadlines, and a skilled project manager able to drive the work of multiple people from the submission of high quality, competitive grant proposals through to successful project implementation, evaluation, and dissemination.

The Research Associate must be able to travel to international partner sites to attend meetings and conferences as needed.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Research Development
  • Work in collaboration with the Global & Local Center team and international investigators to develop and write grant applications in support of various clinical, research, and training programs globally
  • Work closely with the Grants Directors to develop budgets for new grant applications, ensure awarded grant budgets are properly maintained and salary support is adequately apportioned, and prepare annual progress reports
  • Work with community partners to identify data metrics and facilitate the development of data collection and reporting protocols
  • Responsible for diverse data management activities related to collecting, processing and sharing of clinical data with international collaborators
  • Develop and carry out data analysis plans for international research projects using REDCap, R, SAS and/or STATA
  • Contribute as a co-author on peer-reviewed manuscripts of research results; i.e., participate in the development of the research question, interpretation of results, review of background literature, and writing text
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of other materials including reports, abstracts, (poster) presentations, etc.

Project Management
  • Collaborate with Global & Local Center and community partners and coordinate communication to facilitate clinical, research, and training project development and implementation
  • Develop communications and marketing materials to advance the Global & Local Center's initiatives
  • Supervise support staff, including undergraduate students and interns
  • Perform other duties as assigned or necessary

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Master's degree required, preferably in the areas of public health, health sciences, or similar fields.

EXPERIENCE:
  • At least 2 years of work experience with grant writing/management and data analysis required. Experience working in health care, public health, social service or research setting a plus.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with diverse stakeholders
  • Proven ability to think critically and problem solve
  • Must be detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Track record in managing multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Ability to be self-directed, prioritize essential tasks, and respond flexibly to a fluid and evolving environment
  • Effective in working both independently and as a team player
  • Proficient in using data management and analysis software including REDCap, R, SAS and/or STATA
