Responsibilities

We are recruiting one Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Quantitative Health Science within the Division of Epidemiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Sciences. The fellow will be mentored by Dr. Diane Ehlers (Her Bio: https://www.mayo.edu/research/faculty/ehlers-diane-k-ph-d/bio-20537394). Ideal candidates will have research interests in physical activity and quality of life outcomes in cancer populations and/or older adults and have strong data management and communication skills.

Qualified individuals will actively participate in clinical exercise trials and observational studies focused on exercise oncology and aging. The Research Fellow will gain experience with project leadership and data collection, management, and dissemination on an NIH-funded clinical trial. They will contribute to new project development, grant writing, data analyses, and scientific manuscripts/presentations (first author and co-author). There will be opportunities to develop, with the mentorship of Dr. Ehlers and other collaborators, independent research projects and grant proposals based on individual research interests. Candidates will participate in training, education, and professional development opportunities available at the Mayo Clinic or Arizona's local top Universities. The Fellow will also receive funding to attend professional meetings or other professional development opportunities.

This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in physical activity research. It is a 2-3 year, full-time position in which Years 2-3 will be contingent upon performance during Year 1. Individuals will train in the research program of Dr. Ehlers. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic. The following is required for the completion of the application:

  • Current curriculum vitae and bibliography
  • Proof of doctoral degree (Original or notarized copy of a diploma or final transcript issued by the school) or a letter from your university Registrar's office indicating you have fulfilled all doctoral program requirements and are eligible to graduate. English translation is required if applicable.
  • Three letters of recommendation addressed to Dr. Ehlers prior to an interview. The letters of recommendation should include the following:
    • Relationship to the applicant
    • Past work/academic performance
    • Work qualities/personal conduct
    • Overall assessment of the potential for success in a research environment

A Research Fellow in Health Service Research (HSR) is based on a role and responsibilities that focus on health care policy and cutting-edge research to design, develop, and test strategies that transform patient care and outcomes. Research may be interchangeable with Epidemiology, but only in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences.

A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Short-Term Scholars, Research Scholars, Professors, Specialists, and Student Interns sponsored by Mayo Clinic.


Qualifications

Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field deemed relevant by the research program. Preferred degrees may include: kinesiology, exercise science, public health, cognitive neuroscience, or closely-related field. Individuals currently enrolled in an accredited doctoral degree program with expected graduation prior to position commencement will be considered.

Additional Qualifications : Prior experience conducting physical activity focused clinical or community-based research in cancer populations (preferred). We are specifically interested in a motivated individual who can work well as a member of an interdisciplinary team and who has excellent organizational, time-management, and communication skills. We are a large team with collaborators across the country, so proficiency with and commitment to these skills are critical.
