Introduction

We are seeking great problem-solvers to fill multiple positions across the state to find and assemble missing information, recalculate payments, and support Unemployment Insurance benefits operations.

These positions can be headquartered in Madison, Menomonee Falls, Eau Claire, or Appleton. These positions may allow remote work up to a majority of the time, but will need to report in person to their Wisconsin office location when business needs require. Applicants can choose which location(s) they would like to be headquartered in at the time of application. High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work. These positions are not intended to work remotely on a permanent basis.

Position Summary

Benefit Operations Support: These positions investigate and resolve routine eligibility issues; identify and clarify potentially disqualifying issues reviewing system entries for previous resolutions and contacting employers or claimants to determine whether or not a legitimate issue as to benefit eligibility exists; investigate and resolve claimant and employer inquiries regarding eligibility determinations, appeal rights, benefit payments, charging, and other program information.

Program Integrity Fraud Resolution: These positions are responsible for exercising judgment in analyzing, computing, and implementing Unemployment Insurance and special programs claims. They modify decisions as a result of recomputations, Legal Initial Determinations (LIDS), and higher-level decisions. These positions determine claimant monetary eligibility; prepare and issue initial determinations, redeterminations, and amended determinations as well as determine adjustments to benefit entitlement and employer account charging. These positions communicate clarification of internal technical procedures to agency staff across bureaus and the department.

Salary Information

A 12-month probationary period will be required. The classification title for this position is Unemployment Compensation Associate 1 (schedule 02, range 12). This position is not represented in a collective bargaining unit.

Pay will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan in effect at the time of appointment. Starting pay may vary for current state employees.

Job Details

Criminal histories: We consider all qualified applicants regardless of criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Finalists for this position may be required to allow DWD to conduct a background check or other checks to determine whether the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job being filled. For positions with access to sensitive federal tax information, FBI fingerprinting may also be required.

Eligibility to work in the United States: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e. a US citizen or national or a lawful permanent resident) at the time of appointment. DWD does not sponsor visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. This is not a contract position. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Qualifications

It is very important that you specify your experience for the qualifications that are marked with asterisks (*) in your letter and resume as these qualifications will be evaluated in the first step of the selection process. Additional qualifications may be evaluated in subsequent steps.

You will need to have training and/or experience in:

    • Performing basic financial calculations with attention to detail and accuracy (such as accounts payable, banking, billing, collections, credit card or financial services, government benefits, insurance, payday lending, payroll, professional tax preparation, etc., or an associate degree or higher in finance, accounting, economics, etc.)
  • Working independently to organize tasks and complete a large volume of work on time, including adapting to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrating good judgment and critical thinking skills, including in challenging situations.
  • Communicating and relating interpersonally with others to maintain effective working relationships

It would be nice to have experience in any of the following:

    • Working in insurance or government benefit programs, especially in Unemployment Insurance for Wisconsin or another state
  • Explaining complex information to people from a variety of backgrounds in sometimes challenging situations (e.g., unhappy customers, people who are under stress, etc.)
