The largest and oldest zoological garden in Florida, Zoo Miami is the only tropical zoo in the continental United States, occupying almost 750 acres (340 developed), the Zoo is home to approximately 3,000 animals representing nearly 500 different species.

Zoo Miami is currently seeking an exceptional individual to support our Keeper staff in their animal husbandry efforts. We are searching for a team-oriented candidate that is looking to enter the animal care field at a high-performing AZA institution. Candidates will be relied on heavily to support the animal husbandry routines as well as provide guest engagement opportunities by being approachable, engaging and passionate while delivering exceptional customer service. 

Summary: This position reports directly to the Interpretive Programs Supervisor – Animal Science as well as the Interpretive Programs Manager – Animal Science. They are responsible for engaging with the public at the various interactive animal program sites to include the Giraffe, Parrot and the Tortoise and Rhino Encounters. Also, provides exemplary guest service experiences to all zoo guests through guest engagement opportunities such as animal handling and public presentations. 

Responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:

Provide daily fun, interactive, and educational interactions with guests during animal encounters.

Provide animal care and maintenance at assigned encounter areas and related public areas to ensure animal health and safety, staff safety, and public safety through standard operating procedures for animal care as set forth by AZA, USDA, and Zoo Miami.

Prepare diets as needed, feed and water the animals in addition to keeping the enclosures and exhibit areas clean and disinfected.              

Participate in special events, animal encounters and educational presentations through entertaining venues onsite and outreach programming.      

Assist guests by providing information on facility attractions and activities.

Respond to emergency situations and natural disasters such as animal escapes, injuries, wildfires, and hurricanes in accordance to established operating procedures.

Maintain animal behaviors under the direction of management/BET as needed in order to complete necessary job functions.

Prepare reports; complete daily animal enrichment log or other required logs.  

Perform other related tasks as required which may include completing tests, attending meetings, workshops etc.               

Experience Required

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. One year of customer service or tourism related experience is required. Must possess excellent communication skills. Must be able to work days, nights, weekends and holidays on a varying schedule. Must possess a valid driver license. Preferred Qualifications: Associates degree and six (6) months of animal experience in an accredited facility is highly preferred.

This is a part time hourly position with Miami-Dade County.
