Duties/Pligte
- Developing research protocols and proposals, including collaborative agreements where appropriate;
- Publishing research findings in accredited, peer-reviewed journals;
- Presenting research findings at scientific conferences and workshops;
- Preparing regulatory documents for submission to ethics review committees;
- Mentoring postgraduate students and early career researchers;
- Contributing to SACEMA's training workshops and short courses on an as-needed basis;
- Supervising postgraduate students (initially at honours or masters level);
- Contributing positively to the SACEMA community through service and regular engagement with students, other researchers, and support staff;
- Promoting the reputation of SACEMA and Stellenbosch University through positive engagement of stakeholders and publication of high-quality, relevant research;
- Participating in internal committees and scientific review processes as needed.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- PhD in mathematics, epidemiology, mathematical epidemiology, statistics or another relevant quantitative discipline, with working knowledge of epidemiology;
- A good academic record during postgraduate studies, as evidenced by transcripts and academic references;
- At least three years' postdoctoral experience (i.e., post PhD) in a relevant research area;
- Familiarity with the South African public health and higher education landscapes;
- Have published research in recognised, peer-reviewed journals;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
- Fluency in word processing and data management skills;
- A demonstrated ability to quickly acquire new skills and work in a collaborative environment;
- A high level of attention to detail;
- Experience in data analysis and study design;
- A record of successful collaboration across organisations, as demonstrated by joint publications;
- Proficiency in R statistical software.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- Experience with mentoring and/or co-supervising postgraduate students;
- Project management experience;
- Experience with Human Subjects Research ethics review processes;
- Familiarity with the broad range of disciplines encompassed by SACEMA's research, including infectious disease epidemiology, public health, disease ecology, mathematics, and statistics;
- Experience in teaching technical skills such as scientific computing or scientific writing;
- Successful fundraising through competitive external grant applications.
