Role Context

The Flight Operations Officer is to assist the RP:FO in his duties to ensure that the planning of flight operations is safe and efficient at all times. The FOO is required to work as a team with the DHL crew and ground staff as a key role of leadership in flight support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate planned flight movements.
  • Confirm the suitability of the runways.
  • Determining the suitability and availability of all destination or alternate aerodromes, including ensuring that aircraft performance and aerodrome operating minima criteria are met.
  • Confirm flight time and crew requirements and complete crew flight and duty time sheets.
  • Supply a duty roster for the crew members and distribute to the relevant sections.
  • Ensure that appointed ground handling companies at point of departure and arrival are informed of the intended aircraft movement.
  • Ensure the timely availability of fuel at the point of departure and destination and provide the estimated time for their service requirement.
  • Preparing the OFP and various other flight documents.
  • Preparing and submitting the ATC flight plan.
  • Obtain and gather latest METARs and TAFs for submission/transmission to crew members and/or station managers and/or appointed ground handling agencies.
  • Obtain and gather latest relevant NOTAMS and AICs for submission/ transmission to crew members and/or station managers and/or appointed ground handling agencies.
  • Arranging fuel, crew accommodation and transport, including transport at en-route stops, as and when required.
  • Provide feedback to the RP:FO with regard to any reported aircraft abnormalities identified during the dispatch or turn-around as reported or identified by the crew members, maintenance or handling agents.
  • Liaison between sections will be coordinated up to the time of departure of the aircraft.
  • Keep records and visual display of available and/or serviceable aircraft with the anticipated servicing dates; flight schedules, charter booked dates, and/or aircraft committed to company requirements.
  • Determining the maintenance status of the aircraft, in particular the effects of any unserviceability's on the proposed route.
  • When necessary, render assistance with regard to the flight while the aircraft is away from base
  • Circulate information obtained from the Flight Report to all interested parties for the necessary action to ensure the safety and success of future flights.
  • Notify all crew members concerned and all relevant sections, if applicable, of any changes to crew member rostering and schedules.
  • Monitor licensing requirements and maintenance of the crew records for co-ordination with the documentation department.
  • Flight following and tracking of flights.
  • Timely arrangements for over-flight, landing and traffic right clearances as required for the flight
  • Perform such other duties as reasonably requested or required by the RP:FO

Minimum Requirements

Education and experience

  • SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence (Minimum)
  • A good understanding of the SA CATs and CARs
  • A high level of knowledge on the following topics; Aircraft general knowledge, flight planning and performance, Aeronautical meteorology, Navigation procedures, Radio communication, including procedures for communicating with aircraft and relevant ground stations.
