Job Posting Date: 03-Jan-2023

Work Location: Doha, QA

Company: Qatargas

Part A: Job Specification Job Purpose
  • Plans, technically manages and facilitates drilling activities fully aligned with Group technical and SHE standards. Responsible for providing fully qualified Drilling Engineering support for technically complex development projects. Progresses projects from planning and concept selection through to engineering design and safe operational execution. Develops drilling design strategies, writes drilling programs, performs drilling analyses/calculations, provides drillwell surveillance, and acts as a focal point for continuous improvement by implementation of technology transfer and application of best practices.

Reporting and Relationships - I
  • Reports to Head of Drilling Engineering (or Drilling Engineering Lead).

Internal

  • Daily internal contact with other D&C engineering and operations staff.

  • Frequent internal contact with other Subsurface group technical staff.

External

  • Contractors: Frequent external contact with service company technical and operations reps.

Job Context & Major Challenge(s) - I
  • Rig activity starting late 2019 will be similar to historical peak activity levels (2004-2008). In contrast with historical drilling, however, the upcoming programs will involve more challenging operations and a more diverse mix of activity / well types. Some examples of the challenges include:

    • Multiple new drilling projects with significant schedule accelerations, tight schedule constraints, and uncertainty in sequencing of rig activities.

    • Diverse mix of activities and well designs (e.g., spare slot vs. new wellhead platforms, monobore vs. OBB well designs, standard vs. sub-horizontal (SHZ) well architecture).

    • NFPS drilling and completions will be conducted among increasingly congested facilities and in increasingly depleted reservoirs – increasing risk and complexity.

    • NFPS comprised of many smaller projects; more complex interfaces among organizations and increasing requirements for planning and administration.

    • NFE SHZ wells are longer and more complex than current QG2 SHZ wells (which were themselves a step out from prior North Field drilling experience with shorter and lower angle wells).

    • New rigs starting up in very rapid succession.

    • Fast ramp up with service companies who have demonstrated a “lean” mindset for supporting current two rigs.

Job Context & Major Challenge(s) - II
    • Peak activity requires significant additional resources in 2018-2019 with sharp decline in needs by 2024 (based on current activity forecasts, potential that additional scope could arise).

    • Specialized expertise required for certain critical activities and work scope (e.g., fluids engineering, coiled tubing completions, well testing).

    • The primary term for current D&C contracts expire ~ 2021-2022 (at peak activity levels); re-tendering some or all contracts is expected prior to either exercising current contract options or awarding new contracts – a significant volume of work.

    • Accelerated schedule for tendering additional rigs (as requested by QP) to capture current market.

  • Challenges of this particular role include:

    • Developing experiences and skills under mentorship to reach level of competent engineering skills.

    • Execution of staff level technical design engineering under supervisions and mentorship; Learn industry best practices and Qatargas requirements.

    • Participate in multi-functional teams to achieve Drilling Objectives including: Safety, Quality, Cost Effectiveness and Efficient schedule.

Key Job Accountabilities - I
  • Plans, develops and writes drilling programs that include casing design, mud specifications, cementing, BHA and bit selection, hydraulics, wellheads, well control, and other drilling parameters.

  • Leads through technical support of drilling operations offshore and onshore.

  • Responsible for wellbore and equipment integrity during drilling operations.

  • Leads the preparing of comprehensive Drilling Risk Management strategies covering areas of safety & health, environmental impacts, emergency preparedness, well control procedures and relief well contingency plans.

  • Assists procurement activities (pre-qualifications, tendering process, and bid evaluations). Focus will be on long lead-time and critical items (rigs, wellheads, casings, etc.).

Key Job Accountabilities - II
  • Assists QA / QC activities (audits, technical reviews, inspections, specifications). Focus will be on long lead-time and critical items (rigs, wellheads, casings, etc.).

  • Implements Monobore and Big Bore technology in conjunction with Completions engineering and shareholder technical resources. Includes wellheads, liners and related equipment.

  • Provides technical support for Drilling Operations.

  • Assists management in areas of Performance Measurement and Continuous Improvement. Facilitate communication and teamwork.

  • Evaluates drilling and recommends effective modifications to enhance/improve the drilling process. Ensures drilling execution in line with intended plan. Plays an important role interacting with Geoscience.

Part B: Person Specification - Minimum Requirement Qualifications
  • B. Sc. Engineering Degree.

Knowledge and/or Experience - I
  • 2 years post-degree, relevant working experience (e.g. Drilling Engineering) or 4 years relevant industry experience; preference for experience in Offshore Drilling.

  • Well control proficiency. Commitment to safe, environmentally sound well construction. Experience with H2S well designs and safety practices.

  • Awareness of emerging Drilling Industry technology and capable of assessing new technology for implementation where appropriate.

  • Experience in leadership role (formal or informal).

Technical and Business Skills - I
  • Demonstrated Basic Skills in:

    • Well Control and Well Control Equipment

    • Directional Drilling Operations including Anti-Collision Planning

    • Extended Reach Drilling Planning and Operations

    • Liner Hanger Design and Installation Operations

    • Water based Drilling Fluid Technology
