We’re looking for enthusiastic and talented content designers and senior content designers to work on services that make a difference to people’s lives.

Content designers help people find out what they need to know, and do what they need to do, as simply and quickly as possible. It’s very challenging and very rewarding work for content designers who care about improving people’s lives.

Job description

What you’ll do as a Content Designer

Content designers meet users’ needs with content. They help people complete essential tasks.

A content designer is responsible for creating, updating and reviewing content for end-to-end user journeys. They make sure the most appropriate content is shown to users in the right place and in the right format.

A content designer is comfortable using evidence, data and research to make the right content decisions. They make sure users' goals are met and that a service or other product meets policy intent.

A content designer can work within a multidisciplinary team across digital and non-digital channels. They contribute to and use style guides and design patterns to produce consistent content.

Putting users' needs at the heart of their work, a content designer makes people's interactions as simple and speedy as possible.

What you’ll do as a Senior Content Designer

Senior content designer is an experienced practitioner who can take a high-level view of how a user's content journey maps to business processes.

They develop content strategy and solutions for complex services and other products working with digital and non-digital content.

A senior content designer maps and writes user stories and is responsible for content quality, including reviewing the work of others. They mentor content designers and may also manage small teams.

They lead on cross-government content projects and engage with the wider government content community.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information


SEO Salary for this role is from £38,469 (Band min) to £41,480 (Band max).

G7 Salary for this role is from £50,155 (Band min) to £60,781 (Band max).

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of three parts:

  • are able to take a user-centred approach to content design and explain design decisions in a way that other people understand
  • are able to put forward the case for content design to senior stakeholders and product owners
  • know how to plan user research and have experience of using data and user research to inform content decisions
  • are able to handle constructive criticism of your work and to constructively review other people’s work

3. Personal statement: user-centred content design exercise. Details of the exercise are included in the Statement of Suitability section in the application form. There is a 1250-word limit.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the following Behaviours Skills:

You will also be assessed against the following Technical Skills:

You will be asked to do a short (5 -10 minutes) presentation on a specific topic. Further details will be provided to candidates invited to interview.

Interviews will take place from early February.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 6 months from which further appointments can be made.
